This Key West residence is sited at the water’s edge to create an illusion from within that it is floating in the Gulf of Mexico. The plan is based on two bedroom wings connected by a great room that has formal dining and living space on one side of an open kitchen and informal dining and family space on the other side. Over 4,000 s.f. of porches extend the 5,000 s.f. of living spaces outdoors and shade all rooms. Exterior materials were selected to minimize maintenance and resist corrosion. The roof is copper; soffits are cypress; windows, doors and shutters are mahogany; porches are stone. The property can be secured for hurricanes in 30 minutes by one person without tools. It has survived eight hurricanes without damage.
