The adaptive reuse of the 1884 Lone Star Brewery for the San Antonio Museum of Art was completed in 1981 by Cambridge Seven Associates. Since its opening, the museum has continued to expand within the existing brewery context and has acquired adjacent properties. Twenty years after the opening of the museum, Jackson & Ryan formulated a master plan addressing the immediate needs of the museum for the next five years and developed alternative options for long-term growth. The San Antonio River Authority’s proposed North Reach project, which will make the river navigable up to and beyond the Museum, creating an opportunity for a new river entry to the museum. Evaluation of long-term growth alternatives led to the purchase of additional property to the south of Jones Avenue to ensure planning flexibility.
