On this building, Jackson & Ryan Architects was the construction administration consulting architect working in collaboration with the architect of record, Kieran Timberlake Associates from Philadelphia.
The Brockman Hall for Physics had to fit within the distinctive setting of Rice University and also satisfy a number of strict programmatic demands: to house highly sophisticated research facilities carefully isolated from the noise, vibrations and temperature fluctuations that could impact long-term experiments; to gather together a faculty of physicists and engineers at the time working in five separate buildings; and to bring efficiency to the incredible energy demands of a physics laboratory located in a setting of high temperatures and humidity. To accommodate the narrow rectangular site - roughly the size of a soccer field and surrounded by existing buildings - the building mass was split into two thin bars connected by glass-enclosed bridges. The building's eight facades are designed as a series of layers that filter daylight. Each facade is uniquely tuned to its solar conditions.
