The Joy School
Houston, Texas

Located in the Museum District of Houston, The Joy School is a kindergarten through eighth grade school for children who are intellectually capable but, for a variety of reasons, were not successful in a traditional school.

Jackson and Ryan Architects completed a Master Plan in the spring of 2019 for The Joy School that seeks to expand their offerings to provide more opportunities for their existing student body, and then to grow their program over time, to increase enrollment. The school acquired additional land and through the Master Plan process, was able to fine tune plans for growth and expansion.

In consideration for each child and their learning differences, the design team reconsidered and questioned each element of the environment that may be considered ’typical’ for a school. From the space per child and the room acoustics, to the restroom design or the groupings of classrooms that are not per grade level. The design is as intentional as the way The Joy School teachers teach their students. The first phase of the Master Plan provides a new Art Lab, Maker Space, Production Studio and a Multipurpose Space and Flex Space for everything from the school’s special events, such as the huge Halloween party and Grandparents Day, to every day/week events such as PE, and Lunch and the Dance Party.

Located on the beautiful campus of Our lady of Walsingham in Houston TX, Cathedral High School is a one-of-a-kind school that infuses classical Christian pedagogy with the practice of the Sacred Arts. Designed in the traditional English Gothic style of the campus, the school building blends collegiate architecture with ecclesiastical, to reflect the two communities it serves, parish and school. The building is equipped with world class art and music studios, chemistry and biology labs, and generous public spaces for students to socialize and share their latest epiphany.
